How To Raid Fallen Protectors on Flex

The Fallen Protectors introduces more mechanics to watch out for, mostly because there are three bosses involved.  This is a rotation fight, where the group will target each boss in a certain order, and then try to down all three at the same time to end the fight.

The Bosses: There are three bosses in this fight Rook Stonetoe, He Softfoot, and Sun Tenderheart. For simplicity's sake, just refer to them as "Rook, He, and Sun." If the DPS can remember them in that order then the fight is already half over for them. The raid group targets each boss in the order listed above until they use their Desperate Measure. This ability happens whenever a boss reaches 66% or 33%. The group kills whatever adds are spawned from this ability, and then moves to the next boss in the order.

One rotation through the bosses will go as follows:  Rook -> adds -> He -> add -> Sun -> adds. The group will go through this rotation twice.

After the second rotation ends (after all bosses have used their Desperate Measures twice and are now below 33%) the goal of the rest of the fight is to make sure all three bosses die at about the same time. When each reaches zero life, they will begin casting a spell called Bond of the Golden Lotus, which will heal them 20%. So, calling out the boss with the most health should help a raid group coordinate its DPS.

Layout: The layout is pretty straightforward. There's a drop down entrance where you come in, a force field off to the left that prevents you from leaving until you're done with the boss, and a large, open room for you to set up in. Note that if you get knocked through the force field, it will mess up the fight and probably reset things.

Positioning: If you'll forgive the somewhat rudimentary drawing, the raid will set itself up according to the diagram. The star represents where the healers and ranged DPS will stand. Grouping up is very important since it allows the healers to put down healing rings.

The squares represent the positions of each tank and which boss they should pull. They will set up away from the group but also within heal range. This room is large enough for the tanks to run out of healing range, so that is something to bear in mind during the fight. Sun cannot be tanked, so she's mostly ignored until its time to hit her.

As is usually the case, melee DPS will get plenty of cardio, running from boss to boss, depending on which one they should be targeting.

Abilities: Each boss will use their Desperate Measure twice, and their own abilities many times throughout the fight

Desperate Measures:

  • Rook - Rook will summon three adds, Embodied Sorrow, Gloom, and Misery. Each one will use different abilities.
    • Sorrow - uses Inferno Strike, which does massive damage but is divided by the number of people around the person being targeted. So, when a person is targeted (usually indicated by a golden ring around them) the best thing they can do is stand next to a lot of people.
    • Gloom - uses Corruption Shock, which fires off lightning that will hit the ground and explode on anyone within 4 yards. You should be able to see where its going to hit and move out the impact zone, but its not something you should do until Embodied Sorrow is dead.
    • Misery - uses Defiled Ground, which knocks back his target and leaves the ground a black, glowing, color. Simply put, no one should stand on that glowing ground or they'll take damage. This should only be a concern for the tanks and melee DPS.
  • He - He will summon one add known as Embodied Anguish and this add will choose a random target for its Mark of Anguish. Whomever this mark is on needs to target the tank who is normally on He and press the button in the middle of their screen to transfer the mark.
  • Sun - When Sun uses her Desperate Measure, she will create a bubble in the middle of the room and two adds outside of that bubble. Everyone who isn't in the bubble will take considerable damage. The bubble will persist until the adds that stand outside of it are killed.
Normal Abilities for Rook:
  • Vengeful Strikes - Rook will do a damaging cone attack to anyone standing in front of him.
  • Corrupted Brew - Rook will throw kegs into the air that will land and do damage as well as slow down anyone they hit. Their landing spots should be indicated by a swirling green mark on the floor, so shuffling out of the danger zone is a good idea.
  • Clash - Rook will pull a random target half-way too him and then begin using his Corruption Kick, which is basically a whirlwind attack. If anyone is in range of the whirlwind, they simply need to move out of it.
Normal Abilities for He:
  • Gouge - He will cast gouge, and if his target is still facing him when it goes off, they will become stunned and He will begin going after other people in the raid.  If the target has their back turned, they will be knocked around but will not be stunned, so its better to turn around when he uses this ability.
  • Noxious Poison - this is a poison he will put on his weapon periodically during the fight. When he has it on, he will create poison clouds where his target is standing. Anyone near the boss should simply avoid these.
  • In addition, this boss uses Garrote, which puts a dot (damage over time) on a random party member and uses Instant Poison, which does additional damage every time he hits his target.
Normal Abilities for Sun:
  • Sha Sear - targets one person and damages anyone around that target. The person who is targeted can move slightly away from the party to reduce the damage this can do.
  • Calamity - an AoE spell that will significantly damage the party after it is cast. Any damage reduction move is preferable to use here.
  • Shadow Word: Bane - a spell that will be cast on several targets. Once this spell does damage, it will jump to another person, and then repeat that process until it has jumped 3 times.

From The Tank's Perspective:
Rook Tank: The Rook tank has a fairly straight-forward fight for most of this battle. Simply stand in front of Rook and use your damage-mitigating moves in the best way you know how. When Rook uses his Desperate Measure ability, look for the Embodied Misery.  He should appear somewhere off to your left if you're facing the center of the room.

Once you have aggro, prepare to get knocked backwards. As long as you make sure he's not knocking you towards the party, towards the force-field, or into the corrupted ground he's just created, you should be fine. This is the most distracting part of the fight for healers, so you might consider burning some soft cool downs here.

Rook will jump away from you and use his Corruption Kick on a random party member, but that's nothing to be alarmed about. In fact, the best thing you can do is probably to just stand where you are and wait for him to come back. There's really no reason to go charging into that whirlwind unless you enjoy kicks to the face.

The only other consideration is when Sun uses her Desperate Measures. Like everyone else, you have to move into the bubble, but Rook's cone attack could kill people. So, move into the bubble and then angle Rook so that his cone attack will be aimed harmlessly away from the group.

He Tank: The He tank is basically looking for the Gouge ability the whole fight. Whenever the boss begins casting it, you need to turn your back immediately and let him stab you in the back. Deadly Boss Mods is very helpful in this fight since it shows when that move is off of cool down.

In addition, its a good idea to angle your camera so it looks downward. He will periodically put poison clouds under your feet, so this is a good way to notice what you're standing on. Do not be overly concerned if He teleports over to the group and stabs somebody. It does not mean you lost aggro, it just means he's using his Garrote ability. The only time you should lose aggro is if he stuns you with his Gouge.

When Rook uses his Desperate Measures, which should happen relatively early in the fight, look for the Embodied Gloom, that should appear near where you're tanking. Pulling that add in will help keep him away from the group, and give them more time to avoid the lightning he will be throwing in the air. However, while tanking this add, you still have to be mindful of the gouge.

Once He uses his Desperate Measures, the Embodied Anguish should be redirected back at you. You will be rooted in place and the add will continue to attack you, while also reducing your armor. Any soft cool downs you have should probably be popped here. If the add is dying slowly, and you're worried about getting killed, you may consider putting the Mark of Anguish on the other tank.

Finally, like everyone else, you must run into the bubble when Sun uses her Desperate Measures, but still be mindful to avoid the gouges. As the fight goes on, He will use his Gouge ability quicker.

From The Healer's Perspective:
This fight is very healing intensive, and will check to see if you're ready for further bosses. There is significant AoE damage and dots that will be spread all through-out the raid. The key is to not be overwhelmed by all the damage that's being spread around, and to recognize when to use your biggest heals.

Healing circles are golden on this fight, so make sure you put them down when you have them. One of the dots can be dispelled, but I wouldn't recommend wasting the mana on it. Instead, try to heal through it using whatever AoE heals you have. This is where diverse groups of healers really excel. A group with too many single target healers will find this fight quite hard.

The first thing to look for is Sun's Calamity ability. This does significant AoE damage, so you must be ready to do significant AoE heals shortly afterward. Do not burn your biggest spells on this ability, because it will happen several times, but be ready to pick up the intensity after it goes off.

The second thing to look for is Rook's Desperate Measures. During this phase, three adds will pop down and the whole raid can take some ridiculous damage. So, this is where the biggest heals you have will need to be used. Coordination is the key though. If every healer pops their Tranquility and Divine Hymn at the same time, you'll over heal like crazy but have nothing left for the next time Rook uses his Desperate Measures.

Outside of these two things, you just need to follow the general mechanics of the fight. Don't stand in the glowing damage stuff, stay close to the group if you get targeted by Inferno Strike, and run into the bubble when it pops up in the middle.

From The DPS Perspective:
Most of this fight is about killing things in the correct order. As stated before, the boss order is Rook -> He -> Sun. You'll go through this rotation twice, and then you'll have to kill all the bosses at about the same rate.

Rook will be your first target. You should take him down to about 66% before he uses his Desperate Measures and summons three adds. The add closest to the group, Embodied Sorrow should be the first thing you kill. In fact, its a good idea to pop a soft cool down so that it dies quickly. After Sorrow is dead, target Gloom, which should be off to your right, and then Misery, off to your left.

Once all three adds are dead, you target He. When He reaches 66%, he will summon only one add, but that add will target someone with a Mark of Anguish and attack them until they transfer that mark. Whoever gets it should transfer it to the tank that is normally on He. Then, it becomes a small DPS race where you try to kill the add before it weakens and kills the tank.

Once that has been resolved, you move on to Sun. At 66%, she will pop a bubble in the middle of the room. Its important everyone moves into the bubble to avoid getting killed. The ranged DPS need to focus on the adds that will stand outside of the bubble, while the melee DPS kills all of the stuff that is running into it. When the bubble finally pops, its a good idea to run back to where the group had been standing before, since Rook will inevitably try to do his whirlwind ability right afterward.

So, that is a general feel for how the first rotation will go. You must go through one more before you're done with the Desperate Measures. Once you've done two rotations, that's the optimal time to start popping blood lust and blowing cool downs. Target the boss with the most health from this point on so that all the bosses die at about the same time.

During the fight, there are quite a few things to watch out for. Avoid the bad glowing stuff on the ground, don't stand in Rook's kicks if he comes over, group up whenever the Embodied Sorrow is out, and try to stand away from the party when you're being targeted by Sha Sear.  In addition, if you have damage reducing moves, it is best to use them when you see Calamity, since this does considerable damage.
